North Yorkshire Police said the incident occurred last Monday (January 27) at Acomb between 5:30pm and 6pm.
Officials say it involved two men. The suspect is a 12-year-old girl.
“As part of the investigation, we are currently suing information that was filmed around the time of the incident and important CCTV or doorbell footage,” a Force spokesman said.
They added as follows. “Two men, allegedly about 40 people wearing dark clothes and riding black bikes approached the girl, and one of the men touched her inappropriately.”
