The “undeveloped possibilities” of Ilkley's historic Craiglands hotel will be brought to the forefront with the aim of relocating it as a major destination for four-star wellness.
The plan came when Rambler Group Holdings announced the hotel's acquisition under premium hospitality brand Aura Hotels.
The move is the first step in Rambler's ambitious 24-month, £30 million growth strategy, building a national footprint in the UK's hospitality sector through landmark hotel acquisition and transformation.
Built in 1859, the Cragrans Hotel is one of the most iconic Victorian buildings in the area that opposes the stunning backdrop of Ilcreamär.
Known for its rich history as a hydroelectric retreat, the hotel will undergo comprehensive renovations with the aim of relocating it as a major destination for four-star wellness.
The transformation center is Verbeia Spa & Wellness Center, which has recently benefited from a £2.2 million investment.
Aura Hotels plans to reopen and enhance its spa to provide a best-in-class experience for guests and locals.
The spa area will become a central part of the transformation, according to the new owner of the Cragrains Hotel in Ilkley
“The Craiglands Hotel is an incredible heritage and potentially undeveloped property,” said Qasim Ahmed, CEO of Rambler Group Holdings.
“This marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, not just for its hotels, but for its presence in the UK hospitality sector. Our goal is to create something truly special for both Ilkley and our guests while reverting the Cragrains to their former grandeur.”
Aura Hotels is the luxury hotel division of Rambler Group Holdings, a diverse business spanning transportation, tourism, leisure and hospitality. Each aura property is selected for its heritage and transformed with strict standards, timeless design, and deep sense of place.
Neil Chawla, seller of the Irantus Hotel, said: “The collaboration between Rambler Group Holdings and Kasim was an absolute joy. The transaction dealt with professionalism, clarity and efficiency from start to finish.
“Under the Aura Hotels brand, we are sure the Cragrains will have the best possible hand in the next chapter.”
The acquisition is the first of several of the Aura Hotels to build a curated collection of elegant, experience-driven properties across the UK.
The Cragrains was built in 1859 and was one of the largest and most finely constructed dedicated hydroelectric power plants in the country. The first owner was the Dobson brothers, one of the brothers was Dr. Henry Dobson, and the patients were provided with a doctor who oversaw all the treatments.
These included mustard pads, massages and all the latest Turkish, Russian and electrochemical baths. Coupled with the “tonic” air from the marsh, the system had the effect of increasing the popularity of this incredible hydropower.
Towards the end of the century, the popularity of hydro began to fade, and after World War I, the emphasis on its holiday resort was on the way to Irklee.
