The Magic of Music at Bradford Grammar School

Another important part of our music program is the academic curriculum. BGS' music thriving on both GCSE and A-levels, but that's not what we can say about all schools. Nationwide, few schools offer music as an academic theme, but we are fortunate to have the number of students above A level.

A new and exciting development within our department is the revision of the Music Scholarship Program. Students can apply for scholarships that include free instrumental lessons throughout their school hours, as well as bespoke support sessions designed to reach their full potential. We work closely with the sports department to ensure that music and sports are viewed as complementary areas rather than competing. This is key to enabling students to excel in both fields. One of the innovative aspects of the program is its partnership with Gray Matters, a company specializing in resilience and performance psychology. Music and sports scholars are coached in areas such as mental image and social skills, and support their growth not only as musicians and athletes, but as well as as balanced individuals.

One of the strengths of BGS is its commitment to collaboration not only in the music department but also across the school. We work closely with the Drama department to produce a two-year musical, a major highlight of the school calendar. Like our recent show My Fair Lady and the Addams family, these productions are an incredible way for students to combine music with dramatic talent, fostering a real sense of teamwork and friendship.

Looking at the future, I am sure BGS' music will continue to grow and be inspired. With strong academic outcomes, vibrant performance opportunities, and now expanded scholarship programs, we are suited to support the next generation of musicians. But more than that, we are committed to cultivating a love of music that we stay with our students, whether they go into a professional career or simply carry that joy into any path they choose.

Music is far more than performances and grades. It is about the construction of connection, expression, and a sense of belonging. It's about being part of something bigger than you, contributing your voice and instrument to a community that values creativity, collaboration and joy. That's why I believe that music is a very exciting and integral part of what makes BGS special!
